Junior Frontend Web Developer (Shopify)
We are hiring a Junior Web Developer to help build Shopify ecommerce websites for our clients in North America. The successful candidate will embrace modern web standards, performance, while being an engaged member of a multi-disciplinary project delivery team. This is a salaried full-time position. Digital agency experience, and experience working with Shopify is not required, but you must be able to demonstrate education in HMTL, CSS, JavaScript, and Ruby. This can be self directed study, bootcamps, or from a post-secondary institution. Candidates with Git repositories showing their work are strongly preferred. We will consider candidates interested in relocating to Halifax, Nova Scotia – and remote work within Canada.

Job Responsibilities
- Develop new custom Shopify themes and websites for our ecommerce clients
- Maintain existing Shopify themes and websites we developed
- Implement customizations to pre-built Shopify themes from other developers
- Develop custom solutions for navigation and filtering products based on tags
- Testing and bug fixes in collaboration with the project delivery team
- Develop custom user experiences such as: 3D + AR
- Migrate data from one ecommerce store to another
- Participate in scoping, client meetings, and project meetings to support the project leader and delivery team
- Excellence with HTML5 and CSS (this is the single most important part of the job)
- Using CSS pre-processors like Sass
- Competence with JavaScript (modern vanilla JavaScript, not just frameworks)
- Experience with Shopify's Liquid templating language
- Solid understanding of why and how to separate content from style and behaviour in a web page
- Implementing responsive (and fast!) web designs with modern standards for HTML5 and CSS
- Knowledge of using SVG graphics in websites
- Use of web fonts
- Browser and performance testing/optimizing with tools like Chrome Developer Tools, Lighthouse, and Shopify performance reports
- Use version control systems like Git and develop as part of a team
- Ability to fit in with our team and collaborate with experts in other disciplines to deliver impressive projects
- Experience and comfort level in the command shell
- Producing code that is maintainable
- Work full-time, Monday to Friday, at Able Sense Media’s offices in Halifax, Nova Scotia or remote within Canada
- Experience developing ecommerce sites with one or more of: Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, React.js, WebGL, Shopify APIs, Shopify Plus Cart Scripts
- Communication with clients and internal team
- Assist project leader in planning and running website builds and data migrations
- Documenting development plans as tasks in project plans and feature backlogs
Extras in your favour
- Experience migrating an online-store from one platform to another
- Knowledge of multiple online e-commerce platforms
- Text processing programs used in *nix scripts, like: sed, awk, grep, tr
- Scripting languages like Ruby, Python, or PERL
- Relational databases and SQL (MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL)
- WebGL with Three.js and/or Augmented Reality ("AR") implementations of 3D models for ecommerce
- Experience with requirements gathering and scoping professional web development work for client projects
- Show us live Shopify stores you developed, and include your Lighthouse report for the home page, collection page, and product detail page.
- Show us your profile and any non-confidential commit log on GitHub or another source code management platform
- Show us anything you have developed on the web that displays your relevant skills, or just creativity and excellence at web development in general: hobby site, enterprise web application, CodePen, etc
